HP Baldwin Sports Highlights ’24

Wailuku, Hawaii – Al Paschoal has taken the reigns as Head Coach for the 2024 Boys Volleyball program at HP Baldwin High School.  Paschoal hailed from King Kekaulike High School in 2020 where he led the Girls Program to five (5) Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) championships and post season appearances.

The winning pattern continued with the Baldwin Program. For the last three (3) years at his tenure, the young Women of Baldwin earned consecutive MIL titles with post-season appearances; in 2023 making it to the second round.

Not to say that the wins are an expectation for the Boys program.  However, with his leadership and coaching style, along with the support of the Athletic Department and Coaching Staff with training, and helping young high school Volleyball Athletes discover their true potential, any wins will not come at a surprise.

Hana, Hawaii – Head Coach, Jeff Smith’s Baldwin Surf Team competed at the MIL Surf Competition at Koki Beach out in Hana this past weekend.  Koki Beach is known for strong rip currents and rough waters, however, the kids train in similar conditions on the Northwest shores of Kahului and Waiehu.

It was a cold, overcast day with light showers but it was amazing to see all the teams, coaching staff and parents there in support of the young men and women surfers.

According to Baldwin Assistant Coach, Ed Hayden, the MIL is the only league in the State that offers a surf program.  That was a surprise given the fact that O’ahu, for example, is known for it’s accessible beaches.  Also, the North Shore being the Surfing Capital of the World.  One would think a state-wide surf program would be a no-brainer.

Not to say it wasn’t good news.  This was great news and hopefully the program will expand to other leagues around the State.

On Maui, there are many places to surf at their choosing.  For instance, Peahi Beach is known in the surfing world as “Jaws”, renowned for waves of up to 70 ft in height.  Or, Big Beach out in Makena known for excellent body boarding conditions.  And Fleming’s beach out in Kapalua with great conditions for surfing and areas for the family to enjoy.
